dMAT Exam for International Students: A Complete Guide to Germany’s New Requirement

Table of Contents

Germany is now one of the most preferred study destinations for international students, especially for Indian students seeking top-quality educational facilities at affordable costs. But right now, the admission procedures and eligibility criteria are changing, and according to the latest information, there is a new requirement for Indian students: the Digital Master Test, or dMAT.

dMAT, introduced recently in 2026, is an additional element to the APS documentation process for a certain group of Indian students applying to Germany for a Master’s. The very first test is scheduled for 26 September 2026, targeting the applicants for  Summer 2027 and later intakes.

Being the most experienced German student visa agency in Kochi, Guidance Plus understands that new requirements can make the Germany application process feel more complicated. So, let’s break down what dMAT means, who needs it, and how it differs from APS.

What Is the dMAT Exam?

The Digital Master Test, which is also known as the dMAT, is a test that analyzes the thinking capacity and problem-solving skills of students who are planning to apply to a master’s course in Germany. The dMAT looks at how you can think and understand things and how well you can use what you learned in school to solve problems.

The test is administered by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung). For students from India to take admission for a Master’s degree, you will need to take the Digital Master Test. The dMAT test result will be reflected on you’re a{S paperwork, and it will be a part of it.

Why Is dMAT Being Introduced?

The question here remains: why has this new test been introduced?  Is it to replace the current APS?

The new test is intended to provide an additional standardised measure of academic aptitude during the application and verification process. For students, this means your academic profile may now involve more than transcripts, degree certificates, language scores and other conventional documents. Understanding the requirement early can help you avoid delays during your Germany application process. It is to be noted that dMAT does not take the place of the APS. The APS will still check your school documents to make sure they are real and make sense.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT?

The requirement currently applies to Indian students applying for Master’s programmes whose previous degree falls within selected fields.

Affected fields include:

  • Engineering
  • Commerce
  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Business
  • Management

For interdisciplinary degrees such as Engineering Management or Business Analytics, students should check the official affected-fields list rather than assuming whether they are covered.
